Award winner 2015 - Paul Mara

Dr Paul Mara has provided dedicated service to the people of Gundagai and surrounding communities for over 30 years, providing obstetrics, anaesthetics, and accident & emergency services at Gundagai and Tumut hospitals.

Together with his wife, Dr Virginia Wrice, he has also built up a state-of-the art rural private practice which provides a diversity of services to the local region.

Paul has always been heavily involved in teaching and mentoring medical students and GP registrars, and has tirelessly promoted rural medical practice and in particular rural generalist practice, as an interesting and rewarding career.

He is a passionate and effective advocate not only for his local area, but also for rural communities and rural medical practice at the state and national level. In addition to his community work, he has contributed very significantly over many years to the work of RDAA, the Rural Doctors Associations (in particular RDANSW) and ACRRM, and this involvement and commitment has become legendary.

Paul has lived and breathed the cause of rural health and richly deserves this award.
