In May, Healthdirect released new enhancements to the Service Finder. This included removing the search function that means users could only see results within 50km of their search. Now, patients can view all relevant services, regardless of distance.

This functionality was delivered following feedback from patients and other stakeholders, including ACRRM. Healthdirect Australia hopes that this new functionality will better support patients within rural and remote communities to find and access relevant health services.

In March 2023, Healthdirect Australia released a new version of the healthdirect Service Finder. The project involved migrating COVID-19 vaccination services to the healthdirect Service Finder and included the expansion of connectivity with online booking providers so users can click-to-book a broader range of clinical appointments, including COVID and flu vaccines. This included uplifting the healthdirect Service Finder to a modernised technology platform that offers improved consumer experiences for people accessing and navigating a complex health system - not least of all consumers in rural and remote settings, where access to health services can be difficult.Users can filter the search results by preferences such as bulk-billing, telehealth appointments, wheelchair accessibility and opening times.

The website has been optimised for use with screen readers and features other accessibility enhancements such as fuzzy search (incorrect spelling) and synonym search (type 'eye doctor' instead of 'ophthalmologist') to remove barriers to finding the right service type.

The healthdirect Service Finder is now translated into 15 languages.
Health literacy principles have been built into the usability of the tool and user tested. A guided search functionality, assisting users looking for a COVID vaccination or GP appointment, is designed to connect consumers to services which best suit their individual needs and provide them additional health information and advice along the way.

As part of the continuous improvement of the product, Healthdirect in May released additional enhancements to the healthdirect Service Finder. This includes removing the search function that means users could only see results within 50km of their search. Now, consumers can view all relevant services, regardless of distance. This functionality was delivered because of feedback from consumers and other stakeholders including ACRRM. Healthdirect Australia hopes that this new functionality will be able to better support consumers within rural and remote communities to find and access relevant health services.
