ACRRM is the first medical college in the world dedicated to rural and remote practice. It holds Australian Medical Council (AMC) accreditation which confirms its status as one of the nation’s specialist medical colleges.
Following completion of the scheduled full reaccreditation process in 2021, the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) confirmed that subject to ongoing monitoring, the accredited programs to the ACRRM Fellowship award will continue to provide qualification for the purposes of specialist registration as a general practitioner through to 31 March 2028. This will bring ACRRM to its 21st year as a nationally accredited medical college.
AMC accreditation validates the quality and integrity of ACRRM’s educational programs and enables them to be formally recognised for governance purposes. This assures the Fellowship of ACRRM and currency in its Professional Development Program as recognised qualifications for Ahpra registration and for Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) purposes.
ACRRM was initially accredited by the AMC in 2007. It attained full accreditation status in 2012 and gained membership on Australia’s Council of Presidents of Medical Colleges. AMC accreditation is a continuous process and ACRRM completed comprehensive assessments in 2014, 2017, and 2021 which reaffirmed its full accreditation status.
ACRRM maintains its accreditation status in the AMC recognised specialty of general practice. This ensures that Fellows can practice in a general practice capacity anywhere in Australia. College Fellows train to the ACRRM Rural Generalist curriculum. They are required to attain to a unique, broad, and advanced scope of practice which ACRRM maintains, enables them to provide the best possible care for people living in rural and remote communities.
The Fellowship of ACRRM is now widely recognised in the international community of colleges and medical bodies. Formal reciprocal recognition arrangements are in place or under negotiation with general practice colleges or other key national bodies across the globe.
