The Australian Medical Boards and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) revised mandatory notification guidelines about registered health practitioners and students took effect as part of the National Law from 1 March 2020. These are relevant to all registered doctors as well as medical students while on clinical rotations. Members are encouraged to view the Guidelines: Mandatory notifications about registered health practitioners and Guidelines: Mandatory notifications about registered students, and the additional information which includes case studies and FAQs.
The Guidelines provide information about meeting mandatory notification requirements. They are designed to assist practitioners, employers and education providers to understand who must make a mandatory notification about a registered health practitioner or registered student and when.
Throughout the consultation process for these Guidelines ACRRM has advocated for the need to ensure doctors and medical students and particularly those in the unique circumstances of rural and remote areas can feel confident in seeking the help they need while also assuring patient safety. The College will continue to advocate for ways this can be achieved.
