This week, the College is finalising its submission to government on the National Health and Climate Strategy, which is being developed in recognition of the urgent need to mitigate health system emissions and support the health system and the community to be better prepared for, and resilient to, the health impacts of climate change.

Research demonstrates that impacts from climate change will vary considerably across Australia, with our rural and remote communities  already experiencing many disadvantages compared to their urban counterparts. The risks posed by a changing climate threaten to exacerbate many of the health inequities already faced experienced by those living and working in Australia’s most rural and remote areas.

Strengthening primary health care and universal health coverage as contributors to sustainable development goals, will require shifts in mindset and the re-design of health services. A National Health and Climate Strategy presents an opportunity to design and implement those changes in structure, process and practice across the health sector.

As a trainer of the next generation of rural doctors, ACRRM is committed to developing policy and progressing toward reducing its own organisational carbon footprint, as well as educating and supporting its members on practical ways that they can make a positive contribution.

Members have previously been invited to provide input into the College submission.  There is still a short time to make individual submissions before the closing date of 24 July.

More information is available here. Following approval, the College submission will be posted on the website.
