The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (the College) has today welcomed the news that Victorian Nationals MP Bridget McKenzie will enter the federal cabinet as Minister for Sport, Rural Health and Regional Communications.

The College extends congratulations to Senator McKenzie and looks forward to working with her on a range of issues that affect the health of rural and remote communities.

The Victorian Nationals Senator was named as the Nationals’ Deputy Leader earlier this month.

College President Associate Professor Ruth Stewart says: “The College looks forward to continuing our work with the federal government in advancing health outcomes for rural and remote communities.

“The combination of rural health and regional communications in Senator McKenzie’s new portfolio provides some good synergies. We’re looking forward to discussing these with the Minister and her team, as well as our continued discussions with Minister for Health the Hon. Greg Hunt MP.

“For rural doctors, the need for reliable communications such as internet access and phone coverage is paramount to providing health services.

“This is important not only for the provision of health services, it’s also important for doctors who are often geographically or professionally isolated, and rely on digital services to build networks with colleagues.

“I look forward to discussing with Senator McKenzie the role that an active lifestyle has in promoting health and well-being.”

The College would also like to acknowledge the work and commitment of outgoing Minister David Gillespie, and wish him well in his new role.
