The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) congratulates Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie on his appointment as Minister for Regional Health.
Minister Gillespie was sworn in at parliament today.
ACRRM President Dr Sarah Chalmers says the College looks forward to working with Dr Gillespie, who is well versed in the need to improve health outcomes for rural and remote communities.
“The College has enjoyed a strong working relationship with Dr Gillespie in the past and we know he is committed to improving access to healthcare services and improving health outcomes for rural and remote Australians,” Dr Chalmers says.
“Since previously holding the rural health portfolio, he has maintained a strong interest in building a skilled workforce of Rural Generalists and rural general practitioners who have the right skills to provide quality healthcare where it is most needed.
“With a number of important issues including College-led Training and the newly established Rural Generalist Training Scheme on his immediate agenda, Dr Gillespie will hit the ground running.”
The College also takes the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of outgoing Minister Mr Mark Coulton.
“We particularly acknowledge the leadership Mr Coulton provided through the establishment of the Rural Generalist Training Scheme,” Dr Chalmers adds.
“He also worked tirelessly with the College and other rural stakeholders to protect communities during COVID-19, including through improving access to telehealth services, advocating for the provision of personal protective equipment for rural practices and health facilities, and equitable access to vaccines.”
