Dr Neil McCarthy from Narromine, NSW, is a recipient of an Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) 2021 Distinguished Service Award for his significant contribution to rural and remote medicine and general service to the community.
Dr McCarthy has been a Rural Generalist for 30 years, serving the rural community of Warren in central west NSW, working solely for much of that time. In 2015, Dr McCarthy moved to Narromine Medical Practice where he continues to dedicate himself to his patients and to rural generalism.
In accepting this award, Dr McCarthy expresses his gratitude to everyone who has helped him achieve his longevity of service.
“The medical, nursing and allied health staff, as well as the people of Warren and Narromine are to be commended for their efforts in driving the development of facilities and infrastructure to support me and my family. I thank them for their lasting friendship.”
Dr Andy Caldin, who nominated Dr McCarthy for the award, emphasises the devotion his friend, colleague, and mentor displays.
“Neil’s dedication to his community and his patients is outstanding and truly first class. He is the epitome of a Rural Generalist and continues to work hard to progress rural generalism and advocate for better services,” Dr Andy Caldin says.
Despite suffering a health scare of his own in recent years, it has not kept Dr McCarthy away from the job he loves and those who need him. He supports registrars, medical students, nursing colleagues and administration staff, giving his time and energy to educate and advocate.
In Dr Caldin’s words: “He represents the absolute best of ACRRM’s ideals”.
Judging by Dr McCarthy’s words of encouragement for anyone contemplating a pathway to rural generalism, it’s hard to disagree.
“All healthcare practitioners should take the plunge and accept the challenges and enormous benefits of working and living rurally. I can assure you and your families you will be rewarded manyfold for your efforts.”
Dr McCarthy was presented with his ACRRM Distinguished Service Award at the virtual Rural Medicine Award Conference on Friday 22 October.
