Dr Mark Zagorski, from Mt Beauty and the Upper Kiewa Valley in Victoria, is a recipient of an Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) 2021 Distinguished Service Award for his significant contribution to rural and remote medicine and general service to his community.

Dr Zagorski’s contribution to the health of his community spans 40 years, where he has served as a General Practitioner and a GP Anaethetist.

Dr Zagorski’s commitment to the district has enabled visiting surgeons to conduct procedures in Mt Beauty, Corryong and Bright, allowing residents to remain at their local hospital rather than travelling to a regional centre.

Dr Zagorski is also a dedicated teacher and supervisor, mentoring many medical students, general practice registrars and medical interns throughout his 40 years of service.

Teaching and supervising at both his Mount Beauty Practice and the Trauma Centre at Falls Creek Medical Centre, Dr Zagorski has built a reputation for delivering excellent training, based on his extensive knowledge and experience in treating trauma patients.

Award nominator and Mt Beauty practice manager Pat Ryder attests to Dr Zagorski’s outstanding contribution: “In 2017, Mark taught his 50th Early Management of Trauma education and training course, an achievement that I would think has not been duplicated by many.”

Dr Zagorski also provides medical training to the local Falls Creek Ski Patrol organisation,  staff at the Mt Beauty Medical Centre, and hospital, as well as health education to community groups such as the local Men’s Shed and Rotary Club.

For Dr Zagorski, this Distinguished Service Award, along with his commitment to the local community, is only made possible by the team of people he has around him.

“In accepting this award, I need to acknowledge the outstanding support I have received from my wife, Jane, who essentially sacrificed her career as a speech pathologist to support my work, to establish our home and to raise our children,” Dr Zagorski says.

“I also need to thank the community of Mt Beauty and the Upper Kiewa Valley for accepting me as their GP, but especially I wish to thank my practice manager, Pat Ryder, my various practice partners and all my hard-working staff.”

Dr Zagorski was presented with his ACRRM Distinguished Service Award at the virtual Rural Medicine Award Conference on Friday 22 October.
