A few words from Dermatologist Dr Jim Muir on the benefits of the Tele-Derm service, free for ACRRM members, and non-members who are doctors working in rural and remote locations:
Tele-Derm provides education and individual patient advice in all aspects of skin disease.
Our philosophy is that most skin disease and skin malignancy can be managed locally.
Skin issues can be difficult to diagnose but easily treated. On occasion the diagnosis is clear but the treatment options many.
Tele-Derm now has a plastic and vascular surgeon as well as general and paediatric dermatologists available for specific patient advice and regular educational webinars.
Each case submitted for advice can be viewed by all subscribers. Turnaround times for advice are short and there is a library of many hundreds of cases illustrating inflammatory and neoplastic skin disease.
Recent cases submitted for advice have included skin cancer with perineural spread, traumatic leg ulcers, unusual drug reactions, acral naevi in small children, paediatric alopecia, warts, melanomas and more.
Analysis of cases submitted for advice shows that Tele-Derm enables doctors working in regional Australia to confidently manage the vast majority of skin issues they come across.
The service has come into its own in the face of the COVID-19 emergency.
