The ACRRM Policy team relies on member perspectives to inform policies, position statements, Government submissions and reports which positively influence
the essential services ACRRM members provide to rural, remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

In the aftermath of the Federal budget, the team will continue to analyse further detail on the various announcements as it becomes available. It is expected that the College will be involved in consultations related to the implementation of rural and remote initiatives. A summary of the budget, media releases and other budget-related information is available on the ACRRM website.

The College has also provided recent feedback to public consultations on the Review of regulatory settings for overseas trained doctors, the Ahpra review of accreditation arrangements, and amendments to the Health Practitioner National Law around use of the title “Surgeon”.

We have also worked with Asthma Australia on collective advocacy to the Minister for Health and Aged Care to rescind the changed prescribing rules for FP 50mcg. The Minister has responded positively, with the result that certain prescribing criteria will be restored. ACRRM will update members with further information when it becomes available. You can read the outcomes from the May 2023 Intracycle meeting here.

Over the coming months, the College will be participating in the Mid-Term Review of the National Health Reform Agreement Addendum 2020-25, lodging a submission on the Tasmanian Healthcare Plan 2040, and providing feedback on the Interim Report on the Independent Review of Overseas Health Practitioner Regulatory Settings.

In addition to written advocacy work, the College is also proud to be represented on hundreds of policy and health service forums across the country, providing a vital voice for our members. Nominations recently closed for the newly established First Nations Health General Practice Training Committee, which will:

  • provide direction on the delivery of high-quality GP training experiences in First Nations health settings
  • support, attract and retain First Nations doctors in GP training
  • support, attract and retain more doctors and registrars in First Nations health settings
  • ensure that cultural awareness, cultural safety and responsiveness is embedded as fundamental to GP Training.

If you are interested in representing the College on a state, territory or national forum, you can find out about current opportunities by visiting the ACRRM website

The Policy team values all members’ input on policy issues as they arise. Member input allows us to provide submissions and representations which are more powerful and more reflective of the realities of rural and remote practice on the frontline. Please contact policy@acrrm.org.au  at any time if you would like to provide feedback on a particular issue or consultation.
