The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) proudly announces Dr Rael Codron as the inaugural recipient of the Medical Educator of the Year Award.

This prestigious award honours medical educators who go beyond the call of duty to inspire, mentor, and lead the next generation of Rural Generalists, ensuring a strong future for healthcare in rural, remote and First Nations communities.

Dr Codron, based in Tennant Creek, NT, has had a remarkable journey.

Originally from rural South Africa, he began his medical career in remote settings before spending several years as a cruise ship doctor—experiencing healthcare in isolated environments.

After relocating to Australia, he undertook his ACRRM Fellowship while based at Alice Springs and Tennant Creek Hospitals, gaining GP anaesthetist accreditation.

Currently, Dr Codron serves as the Barkly Region Director of Medical Training, shaping the future of rural medicine in the Northern Territory.

ACRRM President Dr Rod Martin says Dr Codron epitomises excellence in medical education.

“His integrity, professionalism, and ability to support and inspire registrars is highly recognised.

“Dr Codron’s work is far-reaching. “Whether offering in-person or remote support, he has significantly enhanced the learning environment for registrars, helping them succeed in assessments and navigate the complexities of their Fellowship training.

“He is especially noted for his dedication to those who face challenges balancing clinical responsibilities with Fellowship requirements, and many of his former registrars have been inspired to follow in his footsteps as medical educators themselves."
