Following on from the improvements seen from the introduction of electronic prescriptions the College is keen to see further investment from the Commonwealth to improve diagnostic imaging requests.
The Department of Health and Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) acknowledge ACRRM’s participation and input into the Modernisation of Diagnostic Imaging (MoDI) project which ran from October 2021 to June 2022.
The project convened eight Working Group meetings to define business requirements. Design Group meetings focussed on opportunities to enable digital requests, referrals and results for diagnostic imaging as an alternative to current paper and hard-copy image processes and streamlining image access including historical images.
Qualitative and quantitative research confirmed access to previous DI scans and reports was an issue across all clinician cohorts.
A proof of concept (PoC) trial of electronic requesting was convened with market leading clinical information system (CIS) and radiology information system (RIS) software vendors participating in a connectathon in Sydney 8 Jun 2022.
The PoC explored an interoperable e-requesting workflow which supported requestor, patient and provider scenarios (telehealth, face to face) and enabled patients to attend a radiology provider of their choice, including a recommended provider.
The PoC used Individual Healthcare Identifiers to match patients between the CIS and RIS.
Standardised referral terminology was used leveraging the recent work of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) to develop a Radiology Referral Set to improve interoperability and data accuracy.
The MoDI Project closes on 30 June 2022 but engagement with peak organisations will continue.
