The College constantly reviews the ACRRM Fellowship Program requirements to ensure registrars receive the best possible training and education to provide quality healthcare to rural, remote and First Nations communities.

As part of this process, some education and training requirements will change for new registrars beginning training from Semester 2, 2025. These changes are outlined below.

Registrars commencing from Semester 2, 2024 – changes to emergency medicine course requirements.

To streamline the delivery and assessment of emergency skills, the current Tier 1 and Tier 2 emergency medicine course requirements have been removed. These have been replaced by mandatory completion of both REST and ALS2 courses (two-day course). This change aligns with the ACRRM Fellowship program, reduces administrative burdens and leverages funded programs. While additional emergency medicine courses are still encouraged, they will no longer be mandatory.

Registrars commencing from Semester 2, 2025 – updates to primary care requirements.
New registrars starting from 2025.2 will now be required to complete 12 months of primary care training, which will increase from the current six-month requirement. This will not extend the total training duration, and there is no requirement to complete the 12 months at the same training post; however a single training post may offer the full duration.

This change is informed by evidence demonstrating that a minimum of 12 months in primary care provides registrars with broader coverage of essential skills and knowledge that aligns with ACRRM's training program requirements.

The College is committed to providing high-quality training that equips Fellows for the diverse challenges of rural and remote practice. We believe these changes will further enhance the preparedness and competency of our future rural generalists.
